The Louis Riel School Division extends its deepest condolences to the family, community, and Nation of Wanbdi Wakita on his passing.

Wanbdi Wakita, a respected former Chief of the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, an honoured veteran, and a holy man, leaves behind a long and powerful legacy that lives on in the hearts of countless students, educators, and community members across our division, throughout Manitoba, and beyond. He was instrumental in the creation of the Louis Riel School Division’s Grandmothers and Grandfathers Council, and we were deeply honoured by his presence, his teachings, and his generosity of spirit.

Wanbdi courageously shared his experiences as a residential school survivor, offering truth with humility and strength. He consistently reminded us of the importance of returning to the spirit of community and relationships. His messages to youth about identity, love, relationships, and kindness toward all people continue to guide our work and our responsibilities as educators and community members.

We are grateful for his life, his leadership, and the teachings he so generously shared with us.
