École Varennes Building Condition Assessment

On June 6, Superintendent Christian Michalik and Assistant Superintendent Jeff Anderson met with families from École Varennes to discuss a recent building condition assessment. École Varennes staff received a similar presentation on May 24.

During the meeting, it was presented that based on the current building condition assessment, École Varennes will require:

  • Numerous renovations and an addition to the existing building

OR

  • A new building (students would continue attending the current École Varennes building until a new building is ready for occupancy)

Parents/guardians were reassured that while extensive updates or a new school is necessary, the current building is safe for students and staff for the time being. An annotated slide deck that summarizes the building condition assessment is available here.

Based on the findings of the assessment, the Senior Leadership Team brought forward the following Notice of Motion at the Tuesday, June 7 Public Board Meeting:

  • THAT the Board designate the construction of a new single-track French Immersion school to replace École Varennes as a priority capital project request with the provincial government, and;
  • THAT the new school be constructed on the grounds of the current school, and;
  • THAT the capacity of the new school be sufficient to serve current and projected enrolment for the current catchment area, and;
  • THAT the current school continue to serve Kindergarten to Grade 8 students during the construction process, and;
  • THAT any essential maintenance on the current building be performed in the interim.

The Board will consider the motion and it will be brought forward at the June 21 meeting. Parents/guardians can click here to submit their thoughts and questions.
