A Showcase of Cultural Spirit: 31st Annual Folk Dance in the Park

On May 25 and 26, LRSD officially marked the 31st year of Folk Dance in the Park, and it was one for the history books.

A legacy event that started in the St. Vital School Division, Folk Dance in the Park is one of LRSD’s most cherished events. Close to 4,500 students and hundreds of parents gather at St. Vital Park over two days to celebrate a diversity of cultures through dance.

The Folk Dance in the Park committee aims to diversify dances as much as possible, so the repertoire is reflective of the diverse cultures within our school communityDances are also organized by difficulty to allow students at different levels to participate. Music teachers originally created the event to provide a fun learning experience for students all based on different dances and traditions. Music teachers are still the ones leading the way for this event with support from the division.

This year’s event was the first “normal” one since 2019 – last year we still saw some modified dances to accommodate COVID-19 safety procedures – and it was a shift most staff, students, and parents were all excited about.
