  • Design with Us: Aiming to Start Construction of École Sage Creek/Bonavista in 2023

The Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) Board of Trustees approved in May 2022 the designation of a second school in Sage Creek to serve Kindergarten to Grade 8 French Immersion program students residing in Sage Creek and Bonavista as a priority capital project request with the Manitoba government. Learn more about the southeast quadrant of the division here.

The Division has engaged Number TEN Architectural Group, the same firm that planned the current École Sage Creek School (ÉSCS), to design a concept and to provide a cost estimate for the project.

The proposed school is designed for a student population of 700, with capacity to expand to 900. Divisional Leadership is in consultation with provincial government officials to ensure the necessary school capacity to serve the projected enrolment in 2025. Divisional Leadership is also working in concert with architects, engineers, city and provincial government officials, and the developer to ensure that we can break ground in June 2023.

Once the second school is constructed in the community, the current École Sage Creek School will be designated for Kindergarten to Grade 8 English program students. Spaces repurposed for regular instruction to mitigate enrolment pressures will be restored to their original function.

Architects and Divisional Leadership worked with school administration, staff, students, families, and community members from November until January to help shape the concept design that was shared at a public consultation on February 6. We continue to welcome the community’s thoughts and questions about the design.

The final concept design and cost estimate will assist LRSD’s ongoing work with the Manitoba government to advance to the construction phase of this capital project as soon as possible.

    Background Information

LRSD first petitioned the Public Schools Finance Board for a new elementary school in Sage Creek in 2007 and has been making the case for a second school since 2013. In 2017, École Sage Creek School (ÉSCS) finally opened as a K-8 dual-track school (French Immersion and English programs). It was built to its full capacity of 600, after extensive dialogue with the province. Historical enrolment data confirms that the school exceeded its capacity upon opening with an enrolment of 625.
