Newcomer & EAL Programs

English as an Additional Language

The newcomer community we welcome from around the world is diverse. Our newcomer students' English language proficiency, school experiences, pathways of arrival to Canada, and family backgrounds differ, and our EAL programming strives to respond to these differing needs and circumstances.  The Louis Riel School Division EAL Teacher Team provides language programming and supports the development of teaching capacity in our schools by providing programming guidance and professional development to school and divisional staff.

These teachers support:

  • an accurate assessment of each student's needs
  • instructional supports based on identified learner needs
  • assistance with school placement and orientation to Canadian education

Newcomer Settlement Supports

As Winnipeg's newcomer population grows, so do the needs for programs and services to assist them. The Louis Riel School Division's Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Program, funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada  at the René Deleurme Centre provides orientation, information, programs and settlement services to support the needs of newcomer permanent residents.

For more information on EAL programs and services and the supports for newcomers please contact Doreen at the René Deleurme Center at 204-257-7308.

RT @mrheilmann: Taking some time to get next years additions to the @glenwoodLRSD board game collection ready before the Summer Library opens. That’s a lot of sleeving, punching and sorting! Can’t wait to get these great titles out to the students! @louis_riel_sd @gametolearnmb https://t.co/vN1oT0ddZt

RT @sigurdson_chris: With all the noise on social media this is the real story that's gets shouted down. Real people caring for each other and their communities. I truly believe that, at heart, people are good. Let's celebrate it and spread these stories. https://t.co/7GgoBNN863
