K-3 Class Size Initiative

krclasssize.jpg

The Province of Manitoba has asked that all Manitoba School Boards begin to implement a Class Size Initiative that can benefit the early years of our students' learning lives.

Specifically, the Province expects School Boards to implement class sizes of 20 or fewer students in at least 90% of our Kindergarten to Grade Three classrooms within the next five years. The Louis Riel School Board is highly supportive of this initiative and its goal of optimal environments for all young learners.

To support this first year of the initiative, the Louis Riel School Division received a grant of just over $200,000. The Division's schools will also need financial resources in the years ahead for additional classroom spaces, furnishings, and teaching materials. Classroom teacher costs alone are estimated at nearly $3,000,000.

In this first year of the five-year initiative, the School Board has decided to focus its finite resources on a goal of capping Kindergarten classrooms at 20 or fewer students.

For a profile of the class sizes at your community's school please view the information on your school's homepage.
