Updates to French Immersion Grade Configurations

January 27, 2022

Since 2011, the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) has seen a 22 per cent increase in French Immersion enrolment, with over one-third of all students currently in French Immersion programming.

Planning for this steady growth has been a focus in LRSD for the past decade. Due to this continued growth, LRSD continues making changes to the grade configurations in a number of French Immersion schools.

The stable enrolment pattern at École Provencher has resulted in steady growth at École Henri-Bergeron. Over the long term, it is impossible to maintain École Henri-Bergeron as a Grades 4 to 8 school. Consequently, in September 2022, LRSD will facilitate the transition of École Provencher to a K to Grade 4 early years school and École Henri-Bergeron to a Grades 5 to 8 middle years school. The new grade distribution in both schools is also more reflective of the Province’s vision for early and middle years education. Note, however, that École Henri-Bergeron will continue to house the Middle French Immersion program (Grades 4 to 6), which welcomes students who reside in the northern half of the division and are beginning their adventure in French Immersion.

Additionally, due to projected space limitations at Collège Béliveau and a long-term plan to have Collège Béliveau serve students in Grades 9 to 12, Grade 6 students at École Howden will remain at the school for Grade 7 in September 2022 and Grade 8 in September 2023 before moving to Collège Béliveau for Grade 9.

Each of these updates have been communicated with the local school communities. LRSD continues to monitor enrolment patterns and adjust its long-term planning in responding to demographic changes. The community can expect to see regular updates about future changes.
