Construction on the $10.1 million expansion of Collège Jeanne-Sauvé (CJS) in the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) is expected to kick off in February of 2022. The project includes a two-storey, 16-room expansion with an elevator, a new science lab, and a fitness facility and storage room addition to the gymnasium. It also includes a new teacher collaboration space, an expanded and spacious music space, and student breakout spaces.
"The architecture of the addition takes queues from the existing school through use of a similar material palette of brick and Tyndall Stone, with a more contemporary approach – adding more transparency and lightness," said Christina Legris, Partner at Number TEN Architectural Group. "The interior spaces are designed to provide students and staff with spaces for both formal and informal learning, as well as spaces for group activities and student socializing."
Throughout the summer, school and divisional staff met with architects to discuss project process, design updates, cost estimates, and sustainability strategies. View schematic design renderings.
This latest expansion to CJS follows the $4.1 million school board and city investment in 2019 that created a new commons area, an indoor and outdoor theatre, and an updated front entrance.
"Creating beautiful and functional spaces where students and staff can learn and thrive is essential to meet the needs of LRSD's growing French Immersion community," said Christian Michalik, Superintendent. "With a strong commitment to providing a French milieu setting for students, families and staff, responding to this growth has been an important and rewarding challenge."
Since 2011, LRSD has seen a 22 per cent increase in French Immersion enrollment, with over one-third of all students currently in French Immersion programming. CJS has a current capacity of 650 students and is conservatively projected to serve 963 students by 2026.
The expansion of CJS is anticipated to include:
14 general classrooms
1 physics Lab
1 STEM/STEAM space
1 band/music room with connection to the current outdoor classroom/performance space
Teacher collaboration spaces and storage
Student breakout spaces
New fitness centre in the existing music room
New chemistry lab in the existing science wing of the school
