Public Board Meeting Highlights Sept. 21

September 24, 2021

The meeting was called to order by Louise Johnston, Chair, who began by reading the Land Acknowledgement and welcoming everyone in attendance.

Trustee Sandy Nemeth reported that the Riel-Evate Endowment Fund Committee is working on a fundraiser with details forthcoming. On behalf of the Committee, she thanked Pamela Gilroy-Rajotte for her many contributions to Riel-Evate. Pam has been a part of Riel-Evate since its inception and the perspective she brought to discussions as a leader in the business community will be missed.

The Board invested time in discussing Manitoba Education's Better Education Starts Today strategy and the section of the 2020-2021 Annual Report focused on Belonging. A letter sent from the Chair to Minister Cliff Cullen related to the negative impact on LRSD because of Bill 28 and Bill 64 was shared along with the steps the board will take to regain stability lost because of this legislation.

Pandemic updates were provided by Superintendent Michalik referencing letters sent to Assistant Deputy Minister Christina Moody on the COVID-19 Toolkit and to Minister Cliff Cullen on extra-curricular activities.

The Board received the allocation of clinician assignments for the year, the year-end report from Stephen Jones on the Youth BIOlab partnership, and feedback from two recent ThoughtExchanges.

Policy GBGBC - Safe Work & Learning Environment: Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination of Staff & Visitors, was amended to comply with requirements issued by the Manitoba School Boards Association and Policy JLII - Safe Work & Learning Environment: Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination of Students Participating in Extracurricular Activities, received second reading. First reading was given to Policy JLIJ - Safe Work & Learning Environment: Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination of New International Students.

The ad hoc recognition policy committee of Trustees Landry, Page and Vadeboncoeur was dissolved having completed its work, with thanks from the Board.

Bylaws to authorize religious instruction at Island Lakes Community School, Shamrock School, and École Sage Creek School for the 2021-2022 school year received second reading.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45.

The next public meeting of the Louis Riel School Board is October 5 at 6:30 p.m.
