LRSD Learning from Home School Update

June 23, 2021

As we prepared for the return of students last year, we identified the need to plan for those who were unable to return to brick-and-mortar classrooms due to a medical condition that affected them or a member of the household. The Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) quickly established the Learning from Home School (LFHS)/L'École Apprendre-chez-soi, which allowed students to continue learning from home throughout the pandemic. Over the course of the 2020-2021 school year, the LFHS has served over 900 students from kindergarten to Grade 12 in both the English and French Immersion program.

Manitoba Education called upon leaders in distance learning, including LRSD, to join together to build a provincial remote learning centre. Given our support of this initiative and LRSD's budget shortfall from ongoing unfunded pandemic expenses, we will not offer the LFHS in the 2021-2022 school year. We are hopeful that we will be moving into a post-pandemic recovery in the fall and must focus our very limited resources on in-school learning.

In January 2021, Manitoba Education launched a provincial remote learning strategy and established the Manitoba Remote Learning Support Centre (MRLSC) for families across the province who wanted a remote learning option for their children in kindergarten to Grade 8. We can confirm that this remote learning centre will be available to families again during the 2021-2022 school year. The MRLSC will be available to provide remote learning for Grades K-8 students in both the English and French Immersion Program who have been medically advised not to return to in-class learning due to COVID-related risk factors. Further information on how divisions/schools can access the MRLSC will be available soon.

Parents/guardians in LRSD who desire to have their children continue to learn from home for the 2021-2022 school year are asked to contact their home school principal to obtain a referral to MRLSC. LRSD and the home school will coordinate support for technology and be in ongoing communication with the MRLSC regarding your child's registration and progress throughout the school year.

Students in grades 9 to 12 in English program schools who are required to learn from home for medical reasons can register for InformNet beginning August 30, 2021, after advising their home school principal. Students in grades 9 to 12 in French Immersion schools can register with their home school for a program offered by LRSD.
