LRSD National Indigenous Day Live

June 18, 2021

​The Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) Indigenous Education team is hosting LRSD National Indigenous Day Live on Monday, June 21. The event includes an impressive lineup of Indigenous performers and will be emceed by LRSD students in the Indigenous Youth Leadership program. Amelie.jpgAmélie Tétrault 

Sweet melodies and songs written with introspective lyrics compose the musical universe of the young Franco-Métis singer songwriter Amélie Tétrault. Her songs address multiple themes that will surely grab your soul. The topics discussed relate to her anti-racist, feminist, and egalitarian beliefs.



double the trouble.jpgDouble the Trouble – Collège Jeanne Sauvé – Grade 11 students

Double the Trouble is composed of 17-year-old Cree musicians Luc and Aidan Wrigley. Their blend of traditional Metis fiddling, contemporary and classic Folk and country music has been uplifting audiences across Canada, the United States and Mexico. Most recently they performed online for the Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Mission Folk Music Festival as well as notable appearances in Tofino, BC, Rankin Inlet, Nunavut and the International Indigenous Tourism Conference in Kelowna, BC.

Luc and Aidan began fiddling at age three and by age six they performed at the Indigenous Peoples Music Awards. At the age of seven, they were regular performers at Festival du Voyageur. Over the years, they have performed at Trout Forest Music Festival in Ontario, the Maple Sugar Festival du Sucres in Calgary and Nanaimo, and the Winnipeg Folk Festival.  In 2018,  at the age of 13, Luc and Aidan wowed a crowd of seventeen thousand people with an amazing performance at the Canada Summer Games, performed with Ashley MacIsaac and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and were also featured alongside Juno nominated Indian City in the finale at the Indspire Awards.  Most recently, they were highlighted in a Forbes Magazine article about an International Indigenous Tourism Conference held in Kelowna, BC.

Tracy Bone is a 2009 Juno Award Nominee, a Multi-Award Winning Singer/Songwriter, Mother, Philosopher, Humanitarian, Energy Healer, Storyteller & Spiritual Explorer. 

Her spirit name “Keeps The Fire” humbly speaks to her Life Purpose & is the title of her 3rd upcoming studio Album.  
Bone has been determined, guided and focused on her personal healing over the past 8 years from Codependency, Intergenerational Traumas; Sexual/Physical/Emotional abuses & Trust/Abandonment issues.

“I chose this courageously terrifying journey because I wanted to learn how to break the cycle of unresolved traumas in my family line due to both my Grandmothers experiences in Indian Residential School & my Grandfather’s PTSD as a veteran.  I was willing to do whatever it took to be a healthy minded person not knowing a thing about what that would ask of me. To heal all my wounds that I had yet to uncover so I could someday grow into an empowered Woman and Mother that my children and I could depend on and be proud of.” ~T.Bone

ethan lyric.jpgEthan Lyric – Glenlawn Collegiate  – Grade 12 student

Ethan Lyric is an 18-year-old indigenous musician and songwriter out of Winnipeg, MB. He is an up-and-coming artist who has begun to grow a following of young and old music lovers alike. Garnering over 15 thousand streams across all platforms. Growing up he was surrounded by music such as country and jazz. These early influences would come together to build his smooth blend of folk, indie, and pop, although it was not until high school where he would discover his love for song writing. His endearing yet simple melodies will be sure to have you humming along in no time.

Darryl Buck is a proud father and singer from Mosakahikan and Opaskwayak Cree nations. Darryl believes that growing up with his Cree family allowed him to connect with traditions of land, language and ceremony. He has been exposed to ceremony and the hand drum since he was a baby and was taught by the men in his family about the relationship between singer, drum and mother earth. Learning those teachings and carrying the responsibility of a singer, pipe carrier, partner and father have all positively impacted his life and career.

Darryl was born, raised, graduated from high school and started his family in Northern Manitoba. In 2014 Darryl moved to Winnipeg, MB where he founded and organized the cultural revitalization and anti-violence initiative All Good in the Hood. He can often be found speaking to students about the importance of hand drum, drumming for our relatives on Winnipeg's streets or travelling around Turtle Island to participate in various round dances. He has shared the gift of round dances with audiences in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and several locations across the USA. In August 2017, he released his first album entitled HOPE - which has been nominated for a 2018 Indigenous Music Award for Best Hand Drum Album.

Darryl believes music can be medicine and motivation for the next generation. He is of the belief that everyone has a song inside of them if only they listen to it. He hopes this music can be medicine that will help you find your own song.

Wes Nelson is from the Treaty #3 Territory and a member of the Northwest Angle #33 First Nation. He is employed with the Correctional Service Canada (CSC). His career has spanned 17 years in the area of Justice starting out as a Sheriff Officer, Manitoba Justice. 

Wes has a Law Enforcement and Protection Diploma from Northwest Law Enforcement Academy (honours), a Certificate Business Management (honours) from Red River College and Advanced Certificate in People Management University of Winnipeg.

Wes is a Diversity and Cultural Competency Trainer, KAIROS Blanket Trainer and an instructor at the Northwest Law Enforcement Academy. Wes is a certified Crisis Negotiator and Critical Incident Stress Management peer.

Wes teaches pow wow club to several different school districts. This activity instills a sense of belonging and pride. Wes has organized and served as Arena Director for his communities pow wow for 9 years. The vision was to bring culture back to his community and restore the roles of the Elders. Wes has volunteered services at Animiiki Ozosone Family Services with a primary mandate of Indigenizing the agency, Manito Ahbee for 5 years governing one of Canada's largest competition pow wow gatherings and Indigenous Music Awards.

Wes has completed his pledge as a sun dancer, is a pipe carrier and a Helper to the Sundance of Women. It is his belief that through culture and ceremony the transference of knowledge will continue in a good way for the next generations. 

seb.jpgSebastian Gaskin

Sebastian Gaskin is a multi-instrumentalist R&B singer-songwriter based in Winnipeg, Canada, who grew up in Tataskweyak Cree Nation, or Split Lake as it's better known. Sebastian writes and self produces music that is anything but formulaic, thanks to eclectic musical tastes in R&B, Hip Hop, Metal,and Punk. The Winnipeg Free Press says: "...think Post Malone mixed with Frank Ocean, all swag and smooth vocals, hits of hip-hop and rap, rounded out with emotive thoughtful lyrics.".

Following the release of Gaskin's debut EP, "Contradictions", on their own imprint, LieBoy Concepts, Sebastian made some impressive strides. Gaskin headlined a cross-Canada club tour, and made appearances at established festivals throughout the country, including Festival du voyageur, Canadian Music Week, Interstellar Rodeo, and Calgary Stampede. They have supported artists like Common, T-Pain, and has toured supporting the iconic songwriter and activist Buffy Sainte-Marie. Sebastian frequently collaborates with DJ and producer, Boogey the Beat.

Sierra Noble is an accomplished singer-songwriter and fiddle player from Winnipeg, Canada. She released her first album - a traditional Metis fiddle album - at the age of 13, followed by a well-received EP "Possibilities" which debuted her gift as a songwriter. She has performed around the world including as an opening act for Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, and Johnny Reid, and as a featured performer in the Opening Ceremony of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Sierra's seamless ability  to transition from high energy to intimate, timeless singer-songwriter to world-class fiddle, leaves everyone in attendance having witnessed something unique and unforgettable.
