On Thursday, May 14, the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) sent out a survey that asked all LRSD parents/guardians if they felt they were receiving adequate support from the division during the indefinite suspension of classes. To date, 3,240 parents/guardians from 32 LRSD schools responded to the survey.
Of those 3,240 responses, 2,883 people (89 per cent) indicated they felt supported during this period of remote learning. Of the 357 people who indicated that they would like more support during this remote learning period, 55 people (15 per cent) wanted more help in communication; 21 people (6 per cent) identified further support with other resources such as food or internet access; and 90 people (25 per cent) listed “Other” as the area they required additional support.
Respondents who indicated they would like additional support were also asked if they would like to be contacted to discuss how LRSD could provide the extra support they required. A total of 128 people asked the division to get in touch with them. LRSD staff members have and continue to reach out to each of those individuals to have follow-up conversations and to identify solutions.
The total number of people who responded to the survey represent about a third of the total number of families in LRSD, which is an impressive sample size from a statistical point of view--thank you for taking the time to respond! The results show nearly 90 per cent are feeling supported. I know remote learning will never replace in-school instruction, so I want to acknowledge the fantastic effort put forth by students, families and staff in LRSD to make the best of this unprecedented situation.
I also recognize that there have been challenges during this journey and I am grateful for the feedback we have received so far, as each comment, concern and question has shaped the way we adapt to our ever-changing reality.
As we move into Phase 2 of Manitoba’s Restoring Safe Services plan, we will continue to check in with our community and provide updates as often as possible. Tomorrow, you will be receiving information about LRSD’s plan for welcoming staff and students back in June in a planned, purposeful and safe way.
Stay safe and be well.
