The United Nations student group was happy to participate in UNAC Winnipeg Branch’s multisectoral gathering at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which celebrated artists, community leaders, and local organizations working to support people and our planet.
DCI students shared their learning about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and UNDRIP, engaging visitors in conversations about issues ranging from Zero Hunger and Gender Equality to Climate Action. By hosting two interactive tables, they both taught and learned, exchanging ideas with community members and deepening their understanding of how local action connects to global change. Dakota's own Ms. Berven also shared her insights and research into sustainable well-being.
The students’ curiosity, leadership, enthusiasm, and commitment highlighted the critical role young people play in advancing a more just and sustainable world.
Upon reflecting on the event, UN Student Group member Florence Nkanash (grade 10) shared, "What resonated with me most was seeing so many different organizations come together for one shared cause. The community was welcoming and supportive of our work with UNDRIP. The speakers showed the importance of community and how voices, especially student voices now are more important than ever."
This experience directly reflects Louis Riel School Division’s Multi-Year Strategic Plan Strategic Action 4.5. By sharing their learning at a multisectoral community gathering, DCI students extended this work beyond the classroom, demonstrating how global frameworks like the SDGs and UNDRIP come to life through local action, dialogue, and collaboration. Their engagement with community members, artists, and organizations highlights LRSD’s commitment to student voice, experiential learning, and building understanding of sustainability, equity, and Indigenous rights as shared responsibilities within and beyond our schools.
