On April 9, 17 Grade 5 students danced on stage with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra as part of its Adventures in Music concert series, while their classmates cheered them on from the audience.

According to the WSO, “Adventures in Music is a comprehensive program designed to introduce students in grades 4 to 6 to the amazing world of symphonic music. This adventure is the musical event of the year for thousands of Manitoba students, showcasing a variety of styles of music while also providing opportunities for students and teachers to perform on stage with the WSO in mass choirs, string ensembles and recorder ensembles.”

Some students shared what it felt like to be on stage. “I thought it was so cool and amazing to be on stage. I’ve been on stage many times, but this was a thousand times more amazing to hear the music live,” said Gabby. Isla added, “I go on stage a lot with dance, but being on stage with the symphony felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Their teacher, Jennifer Engbrecht, has had students perform almost every year at St. Germain since 2009. “It is so wonderful to be able to offer this opportunity for students to perform with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra,” she said. “It is such an honour, and likely an experience that they will never forget.”
