March 2010

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The weather for the month of February (for the most part) has been wonderful. Hopefully winter is coming to an end and the warmer temperatures will soon be here to stay.

One of our school goals this year is our continued work on creating a safe and caring learning
community through our focus on Rights and Responsibilities. February has been on the right to be heard and the responsibility to listen. On February 23rd, students participated in a Talent Show to demonstrate these traits. What a tremendous number of gifted students Victor H. L. Wyatt has. From singing to ethnic dancing to hockey skills to Pow Wow dancing, students did a wonderful job of performing in front of their peers. Students in the audience did a fine job of listening to each of the acts and showing their appreciation for the hard work done by all of the performing students. Thank you to the Orange House for organizing this event.

Our grade eight and nine students traveled to Dakota on February 24th to begin the transition to high school. Students were greeted by former Victor H.L. Wyatt principal, Ms. Mathez, who is the current principal of Dakota. Students had the opportunity to see the variety of programs that Dakota has to offer as our students plan and prepare for September.

March 1, saw our grade one to six students create beautiful works of art on clay tiles through the Artist in the Schools program. Keep your eyes open, the tiles will be displayed in the hallways upon completion.

On March 2nd, our grade six students and our band students will travel to Dakota to again practice their respective listening skills when the Dakota concert band will perform for them.

Please join us during the week of March 1 – 5, when Manitoba students at all grade levels will have the opportunity to participate in Operation Donation, an annual food drive in support of Winnipeg Harvest and food banks around the province. Our goal is for each student to bring in at least one donation if they can.

The designated items and the specific days are as follows:
• Monday – peanut butter and macaroni and cheese
• Tuesday – spaghetti sauce and dry pasta
• Wednesday – cereal and baby food
• Thursday – canned stew and canned fruit and vegetables
• Friday – canned meat and soup
Financial contributions will also be accepted throughout the week. Financial contributions are a valuable resource because Winnipeg Harvest, through community partnerships, is able to convert every dollar donated into 20 dollars of food!
~One Week, One Donation, One Hope~

Kindergarten Information Night will be held on Tuesday, March 9th. The information evening will be for those parents whose children will be five years old by December 31, 2010. The evening will give a brief overview of the kindergarten program and will also give parents the opportunity to ask some questions.

Student-Led Conferences will be held on the afternoon and evening of March 4th. We look forward to seeing you there. Communication between home and school is very important and having opportunities for students to share with their parents or guardians about their learning is a very rewarding experience for the student. At the same time parents are kept informed about progress. We encourage parents to talk to their children about what happened in class and activities happening around the school. Also it is important to keep in contact with teachers about concerns and celebrations. Everyone in the Victor H. L. Wyatt Learning Community works hard for our students and at school we greatly appreciate the support parents provide.

We look forward to the rewarding times to come and the excitement that new learning brings and the possibility that warm weather is here to stay!
