Parent Information Area

Welcome to the Victor H. L. Wyatt School parent information area. Here is some important information from the Winnipeg Police Service regarding back to school safety .

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY

With the excitement of going back to school, children and caregivers may forget some of the basic rules of the road and personal safety issues. The Winnipeg Police Service Community Relations School Education Section would like to take this opportunity to stress the importance of the safety of our children going to and from school.

Every year serious safety hazards are created by caregivers parking or stopping illegally when children are being dropped off and picked up from school. The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind parents that when they are stopping or parking their vehicles, to do so in an appropriate and legal location.

If your child walks to school, walk with your child several times to familiarize them with the route. Point out traffic hazards and situations to avoid. Have your child walk in groups. Talk to your child about traffic safety and teach them when and where is safest to cross, and always use crosswalks. Remind them not to rush and visually scan dangerous areas such as driveways and parking lots. Other things we can do to ensure our children’s safety:

  • Do not obstruct school bus loading zones;
  • Work with the pick up and drop off programs that are already established for your school or work with the school administrators to create one
  • Develop a Walking Bus Program where children are dropped off at a safe location and walked to school as a group under the guidance of parent volunteers
  • Support and educate your children on the Block Parent Program in your area

REMEMBER, SAFETY OVER CONVENIENCE.
