Code of Behaviour
The purpose of schooling is to help young people develop the skills, knowledge and values, which will enable them to live full and worthwhile lives as contributing members of society.
Windsor Park Collegiate is your school, and, like each student here, you have rights and obligations. You share the school with other students who have the same goals as you do; to do as well as possible academically and to participate in and enjoy the many extra-curricular activities the school offers. Everyone can achieve these goals when rights are respected, and only if all Windsor Park students live up to the behavioural expectations of good citizenship.
GENERAL EXPECTATIONS AND OBLIGATIONS
We have two non-negotiable expectations of our students: Respect and Responsibility.
RESPECT
- RESPECT FOR SELF
As a student at Windsor Park, you have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. You are expected to behave responsibly, speak considerately, dress appropriately, and work diligently at all times. Doing so will indicate that you have the self-discipline and the character of a successful student.
- RESPECT FOR OTHERS
You share this school with many other people. You are expected to help it function effectively by treating both your fellow students and Windsor Park staff with courtesy and respect through the display of a positive attitude and the use of language that is always appropriate.
- RESPECT FOR RULES AND POLICIES
As a student at Windsor Park you have the right to a positive learning environment so that you have maximum opportunity to achieve your educational goals. Rules and policies have been developed by the school and the trustees of the school division to ensure that the learning climate gives each student such opportunities. In so doing, you are showing respect for your right and the rights of your fellow students to learn in an atmosphere, which is positive and orderly.
- RESPECT FOR PROPERTY
The taxpayers of Louis Riel School Division and Manitoba have provided this school and its contents for all students. You are expected to treat the building and its contents with care so that those who follow you will enjoy the same quality of opportunity as you do now. You are responsible for caring for and returning all learning material, which are loaned to you by the school. You are also expected to show consideration for others by ensuring that the building and the grounds remain clean and tidy.
RESPONSIBILITY:
- CLASSROOM OBLIGATIONS
Your classroom obligation is to the task of learning. You are obliged to attend all of your classes regularly, arrive on time, and to bring all necessary materials and to be ready for work. In addition, you are expected to complete all assignments on time. Your behaviour should be helpful to the learning process. By fulfilling these obligations you make the achievement of your academic goals more attainable.
- OUT OF CLASS OBLIGATIONS
Whether you are enjoying free time, are on a field trip or a tour, doing a research project, or participating in an athletic event, you are a representative of Windsor Park Collegiate, and your behaviour should always bring credit upon yourself and your school.
- USE OF FREE TIME
You are expected to use your free time constructively and in a way that ensures that you do not impede others from achieving their goals. The Academic Centre and Library are available for homework and studying, as is the cafeteria.
- FULFILLING COMMITMENTS
Windsor Park offers you many opportunities to become involved in activities, but your involvement often carries with it sacrifice and responsibilities. Once you make a commitment to an activity, you are expected to fulfil the obligation that the activity may demand of you.
ATTENDANCE
I. Policy
Windsor Park’s attendance policy is meant to encourage academic success and to maintain the integrity of credits earned along with the development of lifetime habits and skills. During the 5 month semester, the school acknowledges that illness and medical appointments or religious holidays (any day regarded as a holy day by the church or religious denominations which the student is affiliated) create situations where students will be absent from school. We have allocated 2 days/month, a total of ten absences for those reasons. Parents/students are required to phone in prior to the absences, as would be the case in any employment situation. Once those absences are called in they are recorded as explained absences. Students are still counted as absent and are required to fulfil their responsibility for the material/assignments covered during that class time.
II. Procedures
A. A student who is absent from class shall be marked absent. B. Students missing classes due to illness, personal appoint-ments or personal reasons such as winter vacations, family wedding, sports tournaments, and any other non-school sponsored events will have these days recorded as absences. C. Absences will be excused in the case of:
- Special circumstances such as prolonged illness or chronic illness, and family emergencies.
- Events deemed educational by the administration – such as provincial, national, and international competitions, concerts and conventions.
- School initiated absences such as field trips, drama productions and sports events.
D. Parents and students will be expected to contact the school either in writing or by telephone regarding absences. These absences will be counted as explained. Medical certificates should be provided only in the case of chronic or prolonged illnesses. E. All other absences will be counted as unexplained. F. Parents and students will be contacted regularly concerning lack of student’s attendance. G. Students may be counselled to withdraw from a course or courses if irregular attendance is habitual. Parents will be contacted regarding this information.
III. Excessive Absences
The following actions will be taken within each course during the school year regarding excessive absences: After 5 absences in a course, parents will be contacted by phone by school personnel. After 10 absences in a course, the office will notify the parents and student that the student has been withdrawn from the course. Students with 8 or more absences in a course will be required to make up that class time. Administration would be anxious to meet with parents should this occur.
Make-up Time
Students will also be provided with an opportunity to complete make up time during or at the end of each semester. Administration will make those arrangements with each individual.
IV. Illness/Leaving School
If a student becomes ill or must leave the school for any other reason during the day, he/she MUST report to the Office. Where assistance in getting home is required, the School Office will contact parent/guardian.
Family Holidays
The student or family is to inform the Administration of the school providing reasons and extent of absence. Forms must be completed 2 weeks prior to departure.
a) Assignments, tests, etc., will not be provided to the student by teachers in any program prior to the absence. It is simply impossible for any teacher to cope with the planning and record keeping that such a system would require at this crucial time of year. b) Students are responsible for any/all work missed during the explained absence. c) The Administration will inform teachers of any students who will be absent.
NOTE: Students and families must avoid absences during exam periods. It has been our experience that students in Grade 12 find it very difficult to catch up if a full week of classes is missed.
SCHOOL POLICY
Discipline
A. At Windsor Park Collegiate people will be respectful of others and will act responsibly for the good of our school and community. Students at Windsor Park are generally very well behaved and all are capable of proper conduct. Shaping of appropriate conduct is the shared responsibility of the students, home and school. Consequences for inappropriate behaviour are always intended to change and improve behaviour. A divisional policy for all schools has been developed that will assure that ALL students and employees will be protected from physical violence, verbal abuse and sexual harassment. Contravention of this policy will result in drastic consequences ranging from suspension from school and/or expulsion from school or division by the Board of Trustees depending on the severity of the case. B. School Division Policy dictates that “any student caught in possession of and/or consuming or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, for non-medical purposes, on school premises, will automatically be suspended pending a full investigation of the circumstances by the Principal.” This policy also applies to social and extra-curricular functions, and all school sponsored activities off the premises. C. It is school policy that smoking is prohibited on school property. D. Laser pens are not allowed to be brought to school because of the potential dangers involved. E. Consequences for misbehaviours are based on their frequency, intensity and intent. F. Academic Dishonesty (Inappropriate collaboration, Plagiarism, Cheating) Louis Riel School Division and Windsor Park Collegiate regard cases of Inappropriate collaboration, Plagiarism and/or Cheating on the part of our students as very serious incidents. Honesty and fairness are fundamental to the mission of Windsor Park Collegiate and of the school division. Students who commit such an offence will be subject to disciplinary action. If a pattern of misbehavior begins to develop, teachers will communicate with parents so that they may work together to assist the student. Communication with other school support staff, such as the school counselor may also occur.
Some Key Ways to Avoid Cheating and Plagiarism
In tests and exams
- Do not sit near friends.
- Shield your answer sheet so that others cannot see it.
- Do not gaze around the room when writing a test or exam.
- Do not communicate with any other student during a test or exam: communicate only with the teacher.
- Arrive on time. Hand in all papers required.
- If you hear of anyone obtaining information about a test or exam in advance, report it to the teacher without delay. This includes information about past exams when the past exams are not known to be available to all students.
In essays, reports and other assignments
- Know the rules, including the specific rules for the specific assignment.
- Do not work with a fellow student on any assignment unless authorized to do so.
- Acknowledge all assistance received, including help from friends or others in terms of proofreading, suggestions or information. “This applies especially to material found on the Internet.”
- Do not cite in your bibliography any books, articles or other sources, which you have not used for the assignment in question. A “Works Cited” lists only material actually used as reference.
- Do not lend your work to other students unless you feel certain they will not use it dishonestly.
- Submit assignments directly to your teacher. If you are unable to turn it in to your teacher, turn it in at the office with your teacher’s name on it.
- When in doubt about any practice, ask your teacher. Do not rely only on friends, relatives or fellow students for information about what is acceptable academic practice in a particular course or discipline.
- When material you read impresses you, be particularly careful to use your own words. Use quotation marks and cite sources whenever you use words of another, even phrases only one or two words in length. Acknowledge all sources of information and inspiration. Think of 4 A’s: Always Acknowledge All sources appropriately.
We gratefully acknowledge the University of Manitoba as the primary source of the above information.
Student Responsibility during Suspension
On rare occasions students may be suspended from attending classes for a period of time. In these cases it is the student’s responsibility to stay up to date with all work and assignments in their classes during the period of the suspension.
SCHOOL DIVISION POLICY
Vandalism
When students cause damage to school facilities or property through carelessness or by design, they will be expected to pay for the replacement cost and/or repairs for damages.
Text Book Caution Fee
Texts will be issued to all students for a $10.00 Caution Fee deposit. This deposit is refunded to each student, when all texts and school property are returned in reasonable condition at the end of Grade 12. Since we are on a semester system, texts must be returned at the end of January and the end of June. TEXTS NOT RETURNED BY SPECIFIED DUE DATES WILL RESULT IN THE LOSS OF CAUTION FEES. Since school accounts are closed and audited as of July 5th, any texts returned after this date will be assessed an additional $5.00 late return fee.
Dress and Grooming
Clothing regulations take into account safety, health and the maintenance of a suitable work atmosphere similar to that of an office. Shoes are to be worn at all times. Clothing inappropriate for school, including beachwear, is not to be worn to class. Gym shoes and a change from classroom clothing are required for Physical Education class. Special areas, such as labs and shops, may require special safe equipment.
Hats may not be worn in school.
