Fact Sheet

École St. Germain celebrated its official opening on Tuesday, December 1, 1987 and was named in honour of Simon dit Brisard St. Germain (1859–1941). He was the son of Joseph Brisard dit St. Germain and Annie McGilvray. In 1870, he married Rose Hamelin. He was known as the “suitcase judge” because Ottawa would send him from place to place to preside over cases.

Largely due to his efforts, the former St. Germain school district was created. A school opened there in 1889. In 1906, he was named chairman of the school board. Until 1917, instruction in the school was solely in French. He addressed the Manitoba Association of School Trustees in 1918 regarding a dispute over French language rights.

His political career began in 1932 when he served on the municipal council. He died on May 25, 1941 at the age of 81 years old. He is buried in St. Norbert.
