According to Statistics Canada, Winnipeg's aboriginal community includes more than 55,000 members. The Louis Riel School Division strives to support its aboriginal students' specific needs and an important part of that support is promoting awareness of this community's unique cultural contributions.
Footsteps is an aboriginal education resource centre located at the René Deleurme Centre, 511 St. Anne's Road. Aboriginal Resource Coordinator Pauline Mitsuk and Community Liaison staff work with schools and the community to support teachers, students, and parents. There are five Community Workers assigend to support schools with the greatest enrolments of aboriginal students.
Books, videos, CDs, and kits that are available through the Centre's lending service complement classroom programming. The Centre also arranges workshops, home visits, and presentations.
Progressive programs like Footsteps support the Division's Vision and Mission.
