Facility Review Updates

In June 2007, the Louis Riel School Division Board of Trustees passed a motion placing Dr. D. W. Penner School under a Facilities Review. Due to the low enrolment and declining enrolment projections, the Division identified the school as a candidate for review for possible closure as required under the Province of Manitoba School Closure Guidelines.

A School Review Committee was struck and the task begun. The mandate of the committee is to consider all possibilities and alternatives to resolve the impact of a small school population. This mandate includes:

  • examining the impact of Dr. D. W. Penner’s small enrolment on
    programming options and student learning
  • hosting public meetings, providing information to the community and
    receiving community input
  • identifying and recommending a solution that might assist in managing the
impact of a small population on programming
  • considering the closure of the school
  • recommending planning for students if closure occurs

The Review Committee will present an interim report to the Superintendent by Christmas 2007, and a final written report and recommendation to the Superintendent and Board no later than March 31, 2008.
