In June 2007, the Louis Riel School Division Board of Trustees passed a motion placing Dr. D. W. Penner School under a Facilities Review. Due to the low enrolment and declining enrolment projections, the Division identified the school as a candidate for review for possible closure as required under the Province of Manitoba School Closure Guidelines.

A School Review Committee was struck and the task begun. The mandate of the committee is to consider all possibilities and alternatives to resolve the impact of a small school population. This mandate includes:

examining the impact of Dr. D. W. Penner’s small enrolment on
programming options and student learning
hosting public meetings, providing information to the community and
receiving community input
identifying and recommending a solution that might assist in managing the
impact of a small population on programming
considering the closure of the school
recommending planning for students if closure occurs

The Review Committee will present an interim report to the Superintendent by Christmas 2007, and a final written report and recommendation to the Superintendent and Board no later than March 31, 2008.
