Library Services
The Nordale School Library and Computer Lab are joined together to become the school’s Media Centre. Students are supported in pursuit of all forms of literacy and learning through use of the Centre with classroom teachers and other staff, including a full-time library assistant. Learning experiences in the Media Centre support inquiry and research, much of which has changed dramatically in response to the information explosion. As well, teachers collaboratively and individually plan many other curriculum integrated and social learning experiences that occur in this space.
A collection of imaginative and fictional material as well as information media is maintained to encourage students to read for pleasure. Students are encouraged to use all forms of media, including online and traditional formats, to explore and enhance their learning.
Circulation of Books
Students sign out books on a regular basis and are expected to return them by the date indicated on the books. Students may sign out books at any time, apart from their scheduled times, if they are given permission by the classroom teacher to do so. Overdue fines are assessed after a book has exceeded the due date by one month.
Computer Lab
We have a well-serviced, up to date computer lab. The computers are connected to the Internet through a server located at the Louis Riel School Division Office. Firewalls and filters are in place to ensure that access to material is appropriate for school. Each student is required to submit an agreement, signed by the student and parent, prior to being granted access to the Internet. The use of computers in the Media Centre, like the computers in the classrooms, are integrated into regular course instruction in accordance with the guidelines of all Manitoba curricula, including a support document entitled Literacy with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Across the Curriculum. Student learning outcomes are enhanced by using available programs such as Microsoft Word, Paint, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Producer, Movie Maker, Photo Story, Audacity, and Inspiration. Students also have access to technologies to use in conjunction with computers such as digital still and video cameras and scanners.
