Principal's Bulletin
Thursday January 28, 2010Principal's MessageThe month of February brings with it our second reporting period. Assessment, evaluation and reporting of student learning are fundamental to the education process. It is important then to understand these terms assessment, evaluation and reporting.
When we assess students we are gathering information about student learning that informs our teaching and helps students learn more. We may teach differently or put in a variety of supports to assist students based on what we find as we assess.
When we evaluate, we determine whether or not students have learned what they needed to learn and how well they have learned it. Evaluation is a process of reviewing the evidence and determining its value.
Reporting is the process by which we communicate to students and parents about the learning that has taken place and establish learning goals as we move forward.
Student self assessment is an essential part of a balanced assessment process. When students become partners in the learning process, they gain a better sense of themselves as learners. Through self assessment, students reflect on what they have learned and on how they learn, and develop the tools to become more effective learners.
Once students have reflected on their learning, they are ready to set new goals for themselves. As they work toward these goals, they are encouraged to reflect on their learning journey at regular intervals. As students become more active participants in the assessment process, they are encouraged to evaluate their strengths and attitudes, analyze their progress in a particular area, and set goals for future learning.
On February 22nd students will receive their report cards. I encourage you to take this opportunity to sit down with your child(ren) and talk about who he or she is as a learner. Talk about not only the end product of a percentage grade or a BE/DE/ME indicator but what has been exciting, challenging or surprising in their learning this past term; take time to discuss the learning goals that are articulated in the teacher’s comments and what your child(ren) is looking forward to in the coming term.
