Code of Behaviour
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT
STUDENT ACCOUNTABILITY
We believe that our students should demonstrate the following values: self-respect, respect for others, and respect for property. This desired behavior should be evident in all school situations, including the classroom, field trips, sporting events, and assemblies. It is our expectation that students will be accountable for their behavior. It is the responsibility of the staff to teach and model these values and behaviors. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the staff to consistently hold students accountable to the school/Divisional guidelines in order to provide a safe learning environment.
UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR
On occasion students may make poor choices or display unacceptable behaviors. We understand that some times unacceptable behavior will occur when students are joking around or involved in horseplay. The policy of the Louis Riel School Division reflects the beliefs, guidelines, and practices that support a safe, secure, and positive learning environment. Bullying, or abusing physically, sexually, psychologically, orally, or in writing or otherwise by any person is unacceptable. The determining factor in bullying and harassment is the difference in power between the bully/harasser and the victim. This could be a difference in size, age, social acceptability, or group verses individual.
SAFETY POLICY
Nelson McIntyre Collegiate does not tolerate conduct injurious to the personal safety of students, divisional personnel, parents, and all other persons in the school. Nelson McIntyre Collegiate shall make every reasonable effort to provide a working and learning environment for its students, staff, and visitors where individuals treat one another with respect and which shall be free from the threat of and from physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual abuse or harassment and/or assault.
DRUGS AND ALCOHOL POLICY
The Board of Trustees of the Louis Riel School Division recognizes that students’ use of alcohol, illegal drugs, and/or controlled substances inappropriately and/or illegally is detrimental to their mental and physical health, their educational and social development and the general learning environment.Students using, possessing or being under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs at school is unacceptable. (Policy JICH). Students suspected of drug or alcohol use will be reported to the administration. After the administration has discussed the matter with the student, parents will be contacted and informed. Students attending school or school related activities in possession of or under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be suspended. Parents /guardians will be contacted and asked to pick up the student. If parents/guardians cannot be reached, the administration will decide how the student is to return home. The school may recommend that the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba be contacted. Under certain circumstances the Louis Riel School Division may recommend the student be expelled.
WEAPONS
Possessing a weapon, as “weapon” is defined in section two of the Canadian Criminal Code will not be tolerated on school sites. Violation will result in suspension and recommendation for expulsion from school and possible police involvement. (as per Louis Riel School Division policy JICI/JICK)
COMPUTER AND INTERNET USE POLICY
Electronic information research skills are now fundamental to the preparation of citizens and future employees. Access to the Internet enables students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, bulletin boards, and other resources while exchanging messages with people around the world. Students who wish to utilize school provided Internet must first have filled out and sign the Application for the Use of Internet form in accordance with the Louis Riel Divisional Policy. Pupils and staff must adhere to school policies respecting appropriate use of electronic mail and the internet, including the prohibition of material that the school has determined to be objectionable. To remain eligible as users, students must be consistent with the educational objectives of Nelson McIntyre Collegiate. Internet access is a privilege, not a right, and therefore access entails responsibility.
CONSEQUENCES FOR VIOLATION OF THE CODE OF CONDUCT
For inappropriate choices regarding behavior, the school will apply the following steps. Initial concerns are handled by teachers and staff members immediately when the concern arises or at a time which the teachers determine. If a behavior persists or is of a serious nature, students may be referred to the administration. Possible consequences may include the following: (as per Louis Riel School Division policy JK)
Detention: may be assigned by teachers, the administration, or anyone acting on behalf of the administration. Detentions take priority over practices or other after-school activities and may range in length.
Suspension: if a teacher and a student can not resolve a situation, or if the student’s behavior threatens the safety of others, the students may be referred to the administration. Students may be suspended from school for the reasons listed below. (as per Louis Riel School Division policy JKD/JKE)
Grounds for suspension from school are:
- opposition to authority (insubordination);
- habitual neglect of duty;
- use of improper or profane language;
- conduct injurious to other students and/or school staff members;
- willful damage of or to school property;
- activities which interfere with or threaten the orderly functioning of school activities;
- possession or use of drugs or alcohol;
- possession of weapons.
Students who have been suspended are not allowed on school or school division property for the duration of the suspension, nor are they allowed to participate in any school activities. Classes missed while suspended will be counted as absences due to suspension. Parents will be contacted immediately regarding any student suspensions. In some cases a parent/guardian meeting may be required. A letter outlining the reason and length of the suspension will be placed into the student's file with a copy issued to the parents/guardians and the Superintendent as per policy JKD/JKE. In-school suspensions may be assigned by the administration.
