Code of Conduct

At Lavallee School, we believe that students’ social and emotional growth is a process of learning that involves the development of empathy, conscious and self-control in one’s life. The ultimate aim of this process is to help students become responsible citizens who contribute positively to our society. This is a shared responsibility among the student, his or her family, the school and the community. Ongoing communication and cooperation among families, students and the school is important in helping students to be successful.

The staff, students and families of Lavallee School believe that:

  • We take responsibility to learn and make good decisions and adhere to divisional and provincial policies.
  • We work and play safely at all times.
  • We dress in a way that shows dignity and respect for ourselves and others.
  • We respect all school and personal property.
  • We treat all members of the school community with respect.

In addition to the aforementioned beliefs, the following must be noted as stipulation that will result in immediate referral to the administration, as outlined in the Public Schools Act. The following behaviours are unacceptable:

  • bullying, or physical, sexual or psychological abuse (orally, in writing or otherwise)
  • discriminating unreasonably on the basis of any characteristics set out in subsection 9(2) of the Human Rights Code
  • using, possessing or being under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs at school
  • involvement in gang activity on school sites
  • possessing a weapon, as “weapon” is defined in section 2 of the Criminal Code (Canada), in or on school sites
  • respecting the appropriate use of electronic mail and the Internet, including the prohibition of material that the school has determined to be objectionable

At Lavallee School we strongly believe in the development of classroom social contracts which contribute to creating a school-wide community of mutual understandings. The following interventions are intended to protect the rights of all students and staff to learn in a safe, caring and orderly
environment, while at the same time seeking to preserve the dignity and self-worth of individuals. Depending on the nature and severity of behaviour the following actions may be taken.

SCHOOL BASED POLICIES:

1. Homework Policy

  • All students are expected to do home reading.
  • Students are expected to complete homework as assigned.
  • Parents will be notified if students continually do not complete homework. We also encourage you to check your child’s agenda book.
  • School administration will become involved if a serious problem persists.
  • If a child is absent for two days in a row and will continue to be absent, the parent should contact the teacher for homework. This is only if the child is able to do some work while at home recuperating from an illness.

Parents are asked to support the Homework Policy to help students value the importance of continued learning.

 

2. Personal non school-related items (MP3 players, toys, cell phones and video devices)

Students are discouraged form bringing these items to school as they may cause conflicts among students and theft can become a problem. If these items are brought to school, they must be turned over to school staff and returned to the child at the end of the day. Persistent non-compliance will lead to the item being confiscated until the end of June.
