Music K-5

The Music Program at Island Lakes Community School

The Goal of Music Education:

Music is an integral part of a well-rounded education. It stimulates and enriches both mind and emotion. The goal of the Louis Riel School Division music program is to provide each student with the opportunity to learn to appreciate, create, and express themselves through musical experiences. Every individual has musical potential, and like all other potential, it should be developed to its fullest.

Kindergarten –Grade 5

The Music program in K to 5 provides the opportunity for all students to learn the basic elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and tone colour through a carefully planned sequence of skills involving singing, playing, reading, improvising, listening, writing and moving. The emphasis is on learning by doing. Participation in group activities such as singing, dancing, playing recorder and Orff during regular classes as well as noon-hour groups provides enjoyment and an opportunity to further explore areas in music.

Students begin learning the recorder in Grade 3 at the end of February. Students are encouraged to purchase a recorder through the school at a cost of $7.50. The recorder program ends in Grade 5 in the middle of May at which time the Grade 5 students are introduced to the Ukulele until the end of the school year.
