Planning Process for the 2008-2009 School Year

As the 2007-2008 school year is winding down, the upcoming weeks will be busy planning for the next school year. We have received our staff count and we are in the process of discussing assignments.

In mid-May, we will begin the process of student placement. The discussions involve the student’s current teacher, student services team and the administration. The current teacher has worked with your child throughout the year and has the best knowledge of their needs. Staff will consider many factors when preparing balanced classes. They include range of academic abilities, social mixture, gender balance, individual learning styles, student personality and interaction, student behaviour and class size. We also consider a child’s need for friends. The goal of the process is to create the most workable, heterogeneous combination of student groups. This contributes to the creation of a positive learning environment.

We cannot accept requests for specific teachers. Please rely on our professional judgment and trust that we will group and provide children with the best possible learning environment. It is a complex process. You will be notified of your child’s placement when the information is sent home with the last progress report on June 27, 2008.

Although we are focusing on next year, there are still many wonderful things happening at Howden at this time. We must celebrate our successes and continue to be on task and demonstrate great effort for the remaining two months. Maintaining high expectations will help ensure a successful completion to this school year.
