October 2008

Throughout the month of September, students in all classrooms participated in developing classroom social agreements. This exercise discusses the importance of rights and responsibilities and how groups of people must come to an agreement as to how they will interact with each other. Classroom representatives from K to 9 gathered to share their agreements and worked toward developing a School Social Agreement that was presented to the entire school at an assembly on September 29th.

Tie up your best walking shoes, hope for warm weather and join us for the Ninth Hastings School Walk-A-Thon. This annual event is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct 7. It is a wonderful time to gather as a community, enjoy the outdoors, raise some money and promote fitness. Parent organizers have been busy planning. Doors open at 5:00pm. In addition to the walk a thon, organizers have planned for a BBQ, face painting, animal balloons, jugglers, tattoos and student performers. Come out and have some fun.

We encourage all parents to join the parent council and school administration at the first Hastings School Parent Association meeting on Wednesday, October 8 at 7:00pm in the school library.

The Young Parent Centre, a drop-in program for parents under 25 and their children is now located in the Morrow Avenue Daycare site at Hastings School. The Stay and Play program runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00 – 3:15pm. The program is free and includes songs, stories, crafts and a nutritious snack. The Time for Rhyme program is on Wednesdays from 5:30 -7:00pm. Barb Kinley Wierckx is the supervisor of the programs. She has a long history in early child education and is looking forward to working with young parents in our community. For more information visit www.maccpf.ca

Once again Louis Riel will showcase the vocal talents of students in our division on at the Divisional Choral Celebration held on October 15th at the Centennial Concert Hall. Congratulations to the many Hastings students who will participate in this most inspiring vocal experience.

As we enter the Thanksgiving season may each of us have an opportunity to reflect on the things that make a difference in our lives. We extend our best to you and your family at time.

Sincerely,

Ed Globa             Tannis Steiman
