Library Services

Glenwood School’s Library welcomes students, staff and parents. The library offers a rich variety of materials to promote reading for pleasure and to support learning in our school community. Our collection of more than 12,000 items offers something for everyone: picture books, over 3,000 fiction titles, non fiction books, reference materials and current magazines. Five computers with internet access are also available for student use in the library.

Mrs. K. Burkett, the teacher-librarian and Mrs. T. Hunt, the assistant librarian are available to help students, staff and parents. The library is open 8:30 am to 4:00 pm every school day. Mrs. Burkett is in the library on Days 2, 4 & 6. Mrs. Hunt is in the library full-time.

Schedule

Each class has one book exchange period in a six-day cycle:
Day 2 – Grade 5/6, IPSA & Grade 9
Day 4 – Grade 4/5 & Grade 6
Day 5 – Grade 2/3 V
Day 6 – Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2/3SK, Grade 7 & Grade 8

Books taken out are due back the day of the next library period. For example, Grade 5/6 books are due every Day 2. Books are placed in the classroom library bin to be delivered to the library by 9:30 each morning.

Student Responsibilities

Students are responsible for all library items checked out in their name. This includes proper care of books and reporting any damage to library staff. If an item is left in a classroom or the gym, etc., the student who signed it out is responsible to find it or pay the replacement cost. If a student wishes to read a book checked out in someone else’s name, the book first needs to be returned to the library and then checked out in the other student’s name.

Overdues, Reserves and Renewals

Students who have overdue items will not be able to check out another book until the overdue book has been returned. If a student has an overdue book, s/he may put one item on reserve and this item will be held for one day. When the late book is returned, the student can check out the book on reserve.

The library will send a reminder letter to students who have an overdue item. This notice is intended to be a friendly reminder and the goal is to have the item(s) returned. If the item has been lost or damaged, the student and his/her family will be responsible for the replacement cost.

Books may be renewed provided that they have not been requested by another student. To renew an item, it must be brought to library to be updated in the library’s computer system.

Volunteers

Volunteers are more than welcome in the library! If you are available to volunteer, please contact the school at 233-3619.
