March News

What a busy and fun-filled month we had during the month of February! I would like to thank all of the students, staff and parents for their participation in the variety of activities that took place during the very busy month of February. It is thanks to your creativity, hard work and dedication that we are able to accomplish so much both in and out of our classrooms. This year, we were very lucky to have the Grade 8 students (directed by Mme Labossière, Mme Daumler and Mme Thérèse), organize a variety of activities for the Olympics and le Festival du Voyageur. Un grand merci aux élèves de la 8ième année! We were very happy to see that so many students and parents took advantage of the special occasions that were made available to them. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the members of our Louis Riel School Board as they recently approved a $2000.00 S.C.I.P. grant that the school and the PAC had previously submitted. The funds were used to hire a live band (traditional French music) and to subsidize a portion of the food costs associated with our “Festival du Voyageur community Dinner”. The funds were also put towards the crafts that all of our students made during Festival Week. Merci beaucoup!

Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting

As February was our second reporting period, last Friday, you would have received your child’s report card and a letter related to the portfolio evening. In addition to working hard on developing their units, finding new resources and activities, teachers have also been working hard on ensuring fair evaluation strategies and continually assessing and evaluating their students’ progress and needs. The report card is an opportunity for you to continue the discussions with your child related to his/her progress. This discussion will also carry on to our portfolio evening to be held on the evening of Thursday, March 11th. The expectation is that all students attend the portfolio evening with their parents. Please see the letter received for information on how you can select your preferred time for your portfolio meeting. We invite you to read the article on page 6 off the March newsletter related to the portfolio process. Please call the office, at 253-9704, with any questions.

Kindergarten Information Evening

The “Kindergarten Information Evening”, another very important evening for our school, will be held on Wednesday March 10th. We would appreciate if you spread the word, related to the advantages of French Immersion, to people in the community. Adding a second language to your child’s skills and abilities gives them a huge advantage in today’s society. Thanks in advance for being advocates of our French Immersion program.

Operation Donation

I would like to encourage each student and staff to participate in our “Operation Donation” food drive (see letter sent home or article on Page 1 of the March newsletter). Merci d’avance! March also finishes with a bang as we are provided with some “family time” during Spring Break. Have a great month!
