Program Participation
Participation in the program’s enrichment opportunities will be based on demonstrated above-average ability, creativity and task commitment. The formality of the entrance procedures vary from opportunity to opportunity. In the case of honours courses, school athletic teams and fine arts productions, the procedures are formal. Participation in an alternate classroom enrichment assignment may be based on a brief discussion with a teacher. Students will be apprised of the procedures for gaining access to a particular opportunity when the opportunity is introduced.
Participation in academic honours courses is initially determined at the time of registration. Entrance procedures are as follows:
- In Grade 10, students will select advanced courses on their registration form. It is important that students consult with their Grade 9 teachers to ensure that the selection is commensurate with their ability, creativity and task commitment.
- When there is uncertainty about appropriate selection, it is recommended that students begin their studies in the General or Specialized Courses. If it becomes apparent to the student, the parent or the teacher that a challenge beyond that offered by the Foundation, General or Specialized Course is required the student has two options:
a) move to the 20A program during the Grade 10 year
b) enter the 30A program for the Grade 11 year
- Grade 11 students selecting advanced courses (no Grade 12 courses) must have attained a minimum grade of 75% in any prerequisite courses and must have the recommendation of the department. Prerequisites can be waived by the administration in special circumstances.
Students are expected to maintain a minimum grade of 70% throughout the year to remain in an honours course. Participation in fine arts honours courses and productions is determined through auditions during the school year. Participation on athletic teams is determined through try-outs during the school year.
Identifying Strengths
To help staff identify and understand a student’s strengths as early as possible in his or her career at Glenlawn, students and parents, along with Grade 9 teachers, are encouraged to provide information about endeavours in which the student has demonstrated above-average ability, creativity and task commitment.
