Student Services

Our school counselling services are available to respond to the personal, social, educational and career development of all students of Collège Béliveau. Classroom sessions cover topics such as transition to high school, dealing with decisions appropriate to adolescents, self-understanding and long-range career planning.

Counsellors also assist teachers with the Health Program. Students can choose to see the counsellors or they may be referred by parents, teachers and administrators. Students can be assured that problems or personal concerns will be discussed in a caring and confidential atmosphere.

Educational planning

The counsellors will assist students in areas of course selection and changes, secondary
school alternatives, and post-secondary planning.

Career exploration

Students can explore future job/career possibilities and/or training with the counsellor.

Personal counselling

Students can be assured that problems or personal concerns will be discussed in a caring and confidential atmosphere. The school has access to many resources, and outside agencies. Student Services also include specialists in the areas of psychiatry, psychology, social work, speech and language.

Counsellor's Corner

ATTENTION PARENTS OF GRADES 7-12 STUDENTS:
Research has shown that parents still have the greatest influence on their child’s career decisions; yet, most parents do not know where to start when it comes to career guidance.
The Opening Doors – Helping Our Children Discover Successful Careers parent forum and tradeshow is a collaborative project of Manitoba Industry groups and their collective partners. This event will give parents and adult caregivers the tools they need to help their children make informed choices about meaningful careers. Join us on Saturday, November 3, 2007 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., 1555 Wall Street (Tec Voc High School) to find out how to be more implicated.

Careercruising:

Students can explore possible career choices, education and training and develop a career portfolio. Please refer to www.careercruising.ca for additional information. The username is manitoba626 and the password is careers.

Community Service Credit:

Many grade 9 to 12 students have completed volunteering placement hours and can receive a half-credit ( 55 hours) or a full credit ( 110 hours). Community Service is an excellent way to acquire many job-related skills and also looks great on a resume or when applying for Scholarships and Bursaries. Approval Forms are available at the Counsellor’s office (Room 206).All forms must be signed and completed by parents, students and Placement Organizations.

Take your Kids to Work Day:

All grade 9 students spent the day at work with a parent, friend, relative or volunteer host on Wednesday November 7, 2007. Students will begin to develop an understanding of the world of work and learn to develop some of the skills required to succeed in the working world.

Grade 12 credit checks:

On September 14, 2007, Guidance Counsellors met with all grade 12 students to review their credits and to complete a profile outlining their school activities, community involvement, athletic and artistic activities and achievements and honours. A list of Scholarship website was also distributed. Some helpful sites include:
www.scholarshipscanada.com
www.studentawards.com
www.millenniumscholarships.ca
We strongly encourage all grade 12 students to drop by our offices in order to learn more about possible scholarships, Millennium Scholarships, Bursaries, Awards, Financial Aid, Apprenticeships, Career choices and Post-Secondary programs and prerequisites.

Natural Helpers:

Natural Helpers is a Peer-Helping Program for students in Grade 9 to 12. It is a helping network within the school that helps young people help their friends with everyday problems, refer serious problems to trained individuals and take good care of themselves. Three day training was held from Tuesday November 20 to Thursday November 22nd 2007. A survey for grade 9 to 11 students will be distributed in the coming weeks in order to select students for the training.
