EDUCATION, CITIZENSHIP AND YOUTH MINISTER PROCLAIMS NOV. 18 TO 24 BULLYING AWARENESS WEEK 2007
Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson has proclaimed Bullying Awareness Week from Nov. 18 to 24 to raise awareness about resources available to help stop bullying in schools and communities across the province.
"The Manitoba government has developed numerous resources for teachers, students and parents to help them deal with bullying," Bjornson said. "It is most important for people to know that they are not alone, it is not their fault and there are positive alternatives available to deal with the behaviour."
This year's Bullying Awareness Week theme is Stand Up to Bullying!
In 2000, founder Bill Belsey, an Alberta father and teacher, began a peer support group for students following the 1999 tragic shooting deaths in Littleton, Colo. and Taber, Alta. His first website, www.bullying.org, is recognized as an international resource for anyone dealing with bullying issues. His second website, www.cyberbullying.ca/ focuses on electronic bullying and provides essential safety information for children, youth, parents and educators. Both sites are linked to the Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth website as additional resources for Manitobans.
