October/November

Thank you to the parents who supported the first round of our Sobey’s Card fundraiser. Cards are still available in the office for immediate cash purchase. Another order will be taken at the end of November.

Last year Archwood was one of 89 Winnipeg schools that collected nearly 500,000 plastic bags for recycling. The school received 50 Frisbees made from the recycled material. A second annual bag recycling opportunity is back! Please send your surplus clean bags to school the week of October 26th. We will get another batch of Frisbees and do a good deed for the environment.

Halloween is traditionally a family-oriented event when children dress up and enjoy candy and other treats. In order to assist the community in enjoying this fun-filled day the Winnipeg Police Service has compiled the following Halloween safety tips for children and their parents.
• Children should never trick and treat alone. Adult supervision is best.
• Never let children eat treats until you have inspected them thoroughly.
• Have your children stick to specific time limits and planned routes.
• Children should walk on the sidewalks and look both ways before crossing the street.
• All costumes should be light colored, fireproof, proper fitting and comfortable.
• Masks should not impair vision
At Archwood, much of late October and early November will focus on preparing for, reporting on, and showcasing student learning. Parents are critically needed partners in this process.

I would remind you to expect student progress reports out on November 12th. These November reports are meant to provide you with information on the first seven weeks of school and to help set up the student led conferences. They will not be as detailed as the ones you will receive in February and June because the teachers will not have covered as many outcomes in this shorter time frame, and because they are still getting to know your child in depth.

Student led conferences follow report cards on the evening of the 19th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and again on the afternoon of the 20th from 12:15 to3:00 p.m. Your positive participation in the student led conferences can be very supportive of your child’s success in school. It is an opportunity for them to explain their learning to you and for them to set goals for their ‘next steps’. This is extremely important as it helps them to take responsibility for their own learning and progress. An additional time for an adult conversation with teachers can be booked at another time if you have concerns about their progress. Specialist teachers will be setting up activities that will let students show you what they have been learning in those classes as well.

At this time I would invite you to attend our Remembrance Day Assembly on November 10 at 10:00 a.m. in the gymnasium. We are encouraging students to take charge of planning and conducting this assembly.
