Building Construction, Trades & Technology

The Building Construction Trades & Technology program is an eight-credit Cooperative Vocational Education (CVE) program. Students spend one day per week in class learning the theory essential to building construction and four days per week receiving hands-on instruction in a typical employment situation. Students may experience building construction trades in carpentry, concrete, bricklaying, roofing, heating, plumbing, painting and cabinet-making that will prepare them for employment, apprenticeship or further education.

Students begin by learning conventions and practices of the workplace, developing job search techniques and pre-employment skills, health and safety rules and regulations, the use of hand and power tools and use of construction equipment and new construction technology.

Part 1 - 4 credits offered in semester 1.  Part 2 - 4 credits offered in semester 2.  (Part 2 may be taken before Part 1.)  Start in September or February.

Prerequisites and Beneficial Skills

  • High school students must have a complete Grade 10.
  • Post-secondary students must have a complete Grade 12. Applicants not meeting the entrance requirements may be accepted as mature students. Skills Assessment may be required.
  • Willingness to work in adverse conditions.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good physical health and manual dexterity.

Framing 30S (8055)

  • framing methods
  • post and beam construction
  • wall and ceiling framing

Advanced Applied Construction 40S (8066)

  • advanced house remodeling
  • passive solar construction
  • kitchen and bathroom renovations

Exterior Coverings, Walls & Roof 40S (8070)

  • roofing materials and methods
  • brick, vinyl, stucco and aluminum siding
  • wall and roof sheathing
  • installation of windows and doors
  • system built housing
 

Heating, Air Conditioning and Electrical 40S (8065)

  • residential and commercial electrical
  • energy code requirements
  • furnace, hot water tanks, boilers and air conditioners
  • supply and return air ventilation components
  • plumbing and radiant heat
  • scaffolds and ladders

Certification

ATC will award certificates to students who successfully complete requirements of this eight-credit program.

Apprenticeship and Employment Opportunities

As successful graduates of this program, students will be able to obtain employment on the strength of their work experience or begin their apprenticeship in one of the construction trades. The program is intended primarily for students who plan to seek employment after completion of the course. Cooperative Vocational Education (CVE) provides training that ensures a greater chance of employability in a satisfying career with a good future. Graduates have gained employment in many different areas of the building construction trades.
