Psychology Services
Psychologists have strong clinical skills and a broad knowledge base in child and adolescent development, cognitive processes, mental health, learning, and behaviour disorders. School Psychologists provide a comprehensive range of services to the school community including assessment, diagnosis, intervention/treatment, consultation, and prevention for students experiencing learning difficulties, developmental challenges, attentional deficits, depression, suicide risk, stress and anxiety, interpersonal difficulty, violence and aggression, low self esteem, substance abuse, trauma, and the effects of abuse. Psychologists assess intellectual, emotional, and social functioning, learning style, and behaviour. Follow-up and recommendations may include school or parental involvement, or a referral to outside professionals. Direct therapeutic interventions in either individual or small group sessions include interpersonal, family, cognitive, and play therapy, as well as anger management, and social skills training. In addition to providing direct service to specific children and their parents, school psychologists may be asked to consult with teachers, parents, or other professionals in developing programs which aim to reduce the risks stemming from activities and behaviour such as threat making, bullying, and suicidal gestures. Psychologists also present workshops to parents and school staffs on these topics.
