French Programs

French is an official language in 33 countries worldwide. More than 130 million people speak French, on five continents, and it is the second most studied language in the world. The Louis Riel School Division offers three different programs to support French language education in the community.

Basic French

All students in the Louis Riel School Division receive French language education through the Basic French curriculum. Offered from Grade 4 to Grade 12, it is intended for non-French-speaking students enrolled in English schools. The “Early Start” French program is available at some divisional schools, for Kindergarten to Grade 3 students.

Français partiel

Ecole Provencher and Windsor Park Collegiate house this unique program in which students learn all courses except Mathematics and Sciences in French. Originally designed for francophone students wishing to pursue a French education, the Français partiel program now serves francophones and anglophones alike.

The LRSD Board of Trustees has voted to discontinue Français programming at Ecole Provencher and Windsor Park Collegiate effective June 2009, guided by its beliefs that French Immersion programming more appropriately meets the needs of second language learners, and that the Division scolaire franco-manitobaine must govern Français programming as guided by Section 23 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Board is currently considering how to address parents’ requests to “grandfather” students enrolled in the Français partiel (50/50) Program during these transitions to the French Immersion program in 2009.
